Wedding review 2011

As we are half way through January and with my first weddings of the year just around the corner i thought its about time to have a review of 2011.
Looking back through thousands of photos and condensing them into one blog post is no easy task, so rather than choosing one or two from every wedding decided to concentrate on picking images that sum up what I’m trying to capture when i shoot a wedding.

I love a few detail shots and a set of killer posed photos of the bride and groom, don’t get me wrong I’m very, very proud of them, but the ones that really jumped out when looking back are the emotional shots. Dad pacing in up and down in the back garden as his daughter gets ready, mum gripping her sons hand before the ceremony, these are the kind of shots that underpin my whole approach to wedding photography.

Thanks to all the families, guests, staff at venues (who fed and watered me) and fellow wedding suppliers i have met over the year, but of course the biggest thank you has to go to the bride and grooms who trusted me and gave me the freedom on the day to do what i do best, so with that in mind……bring on 2012.

Ellie and Stephen, Sutton Bonington Hall

Lis and Will, Tur Langton Leics

A few from Lis and Will’s marquee wedding in their rather spacious back garden in Tur Langton in Leicestershire.

We had the usual british summer weather to deal with, sun, massive downpours and high winds, and thirty mins before the ceremony the sky turned black and heavens opened, luckily it stopped just in time for Lis to walk across the road from home to the Church. After the ceremony the sun came out long enough for canapés, drinks in the garden and a few photos of Lis and Will with their horses.
Inevitably the rain started again just as the guests were heading for the marquee, pretty much perfect timing….ok not probably not that perfect for the guests huddling under jackets and brollies, but it did produced some of my favourite wedding shots of 2011.

Huge thanks to Lis and Will for being brilliant to work with and a big big thanks to the awesome catering team from Stones Events for looking after me (as they always do), mwah!!

Laura and Matt, Sutton Bonington Hall

This is the rather cool Laura and Matt at one of my favourite venues Sutton Bonington Hall. Its no secret how much i love shooting at this venue, the atmosphere, the style, the staff, theres loads of reasons but most of all its because of the relaxed couples that book me to shoot there and Laura and Matt were no exception. Laura looked amazing upstaged only by daughter Hermoine of course and the styling and lovely touches like a treasure hunt for the kids all went to make a great day.

Shameless plug here but the stunning details at the wedding, including the photo tree, menus, the amazing miniature Banksy style canvases and the Harry Potter Sorting Hat favours pictured in this blog post were all hand made by artist / graphic designer and more importantly Groom for the day, Matt.

Jane and Andrew, Grace Dieu Priory/ Burleigh Court

Images from Jane and Andrew’s wedding at Thringstone and then onto Burleigh Court in Loughborough, with a cheeky stop off at Grace Dieu Priory Ruins for some dramatic portraits of Jane and Andrew.
After a few formal groups we left the church and headed for the Ruins, the weather was starting to look stormy and as the wind picked up the clouds looked amazing. So with a nod to a fellow photographer i know called Paul Thurlow i thought it would be rude not break out the flash gun (which rarely leaves my bag when im shooting a wedding) and add some off camera flash to give the photos of Jane a lift.

I really enjoyed shooting this wedding, aside from the skies at Grace Dieu Priory everywhere i looked there seemed to be great moments coming together, especialy from the kids involved. It’s great when a client gives you the freedom to watch and wait for the shots, so a big thanks to Jane and Andrew for giving me the time to let me do what i do best.

Sarah and Michael, Quorn Country Hotel

My 2011 wedding season officially kicked of at the end of March with Sarah and Michaels wedding at Quorn Country Hotel in Leicestershire.

It’s felt like a long time since Julie and Dave’s wedding on New Years Eve, so it was great to be shooting again and i couldn’t have had a better start. Beautiful spring sunshine, bags of real emotion from just about everyone involved in the wedding and loads of familiar faces (i shot Michaels sisters wedding back in 2009).

Gayathree and Sharif, City Rooms

Sally and Steve, Sutton Bonington Hall

Back at Sutton Bonington Hall, for Sally and Steve’s September wedding.
The whole day was a real pleasure to capture and the email i received from Sally having seen her wedding photos for the first time was priceless.

“They are perfect, amazing, wonderful. Thank you so so so much. I opened the slide show first with the music, it made me cry – I am such a soppy plonk!” Sally.

Laura and Ben, Frisby / Quorn Country Hotel

Over the last few years it’s become more and more difficult for professional photographers to shoot during Church Ceremonies, it’s not uncommon to be receive strict instructions about where you can stand and when you can take photos. I don’t blame the Church officials, they are just fed up with amateurs running around the place flashes going off every minute and guests snapping away at the most inappropriate moments. No such problems with Ben and Laura’s wedding as Ben’s dad was taking the ceremony which basically gave me freedom to shoot whatever and wherever i wanted. As always I still kept discreet but it was nice to be able to move about and feel relaxed.

Anyway, a huge congratulations to Laura and Ben who were married at Frisby on the Wreake and then onto Quorn Country Hotel in Leicestershire for the reception. We were blessed with some great weather which seems to be the case every September and if you look at the last photo, yes that is a Rainbow and no it hasnt been photoshopped in.
